Phil Ivey to Teach Poker

"Now I'm going to teach the whole world to win at poker." When Phil Ivey says this, poker players might want to take notice. Because if there's one thing Ivey knows, it's how to win at poker.

Ivey has recently set up a website, which currently features only the above quotation, a picture of his eyes giving the viewer an intense stare, and the words "Coming Soon." It also directs those interested to follow Ivey on his regularly updated Twitter or Facebook accounts, where, presumably, the full launching of the website will be announced.

The statement that Ivey wants to "teach" indicates that this site will be different from the standard-issue celebrity site. And since few people in the world know more about poker than Phil Ivey, we can expect his teaching to be pretty valuable. The 35-year-old Ivey has won around $14,000,000 at live tournaments, as well as eight World Series of Poker bracelets since the year 2000 and one World Poker Tour title in 2008.

Ivey's website is not his first venture on the Web, either: he is an important figure in the world of online poker. He helped establish Full Tilt Poker, one of the biggest online poker sites in the world. Before Black Friday he also frequently played on the site, where he has been reported to have earned $17,000,000 over the past three years.

Ivey has become one of the world's greatest poker players through persistence and hard work. As a child, he told anybody who asked that he wanted to be a professional gambler when he grew up. Well before he reached the minimum legal age of 21, as he made ends meet working as a telemarketer, he was playing in Atlantic City casinos using an ID card given to him by a coworker named Jerome. He spent so much time at the playing table that he began to be known by the nickname "No Home Jerome." He was well-liked enough by the bosses that they let him continue playing after he admitted his ID was fake after he turned 21.

What exactly awaits us on Ivey's upcoming website? Only time will tell, but everybody interested in the world of poker should keep their eyes open. A man as skilled at poker as Ivey - and as intensely dedicated to gambling - no doubt has a lot to teach the rest of us. What serious player would want Phil Ivey for a coach?
