Gus Hansen up Millions in 2011
Gustav Hansen goes by the name Gus. That name belies his icy demeanor and the calculating precision by which he navigates a poker table. You see, Gus Hansen, who was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on February 13, 1974, is a professional poker player, a highly successful professional poker player. These days he makes his home in Monaco, and he even lays claim to some non-Poker related accolades, such as being one of People's Sexiest Men of 2004.
But, of course, Gus, who bears the nickname The Great Dane, is known best for his aggressive play style and his notable victories. In the World Poker Tour (WPT), he has finished in the money nine times, has reached the final table seven of those times, and he even became the first poker player in the world ever to win four WPT titles. Even some of his losses are the stuff of legend. For instance, in the 2006 Tournament of Champions, Gus reached the final table only to bounce out on the very first hand: an Ace King versus a pair of 9s.
In March 2011, Gus Hansen won another $1 million dollars on Full Tilt Poker raising his total winnings for 2011 to $4 million. This most recent $1 million came from a series of limit deuce-to-seven triple draw games and a series of pot-limit Omaha games over a period of just seven days. Gus has put an excellent foundation in place for having an incredibly successful year. It's even more amazing when you consider that he has had the bulk of this success while generally playing pots that are less than the six figures to which he's accustomed. In fact, during this 7-day winning streak, Gus' biggest action was $1,000 pot-limit Omaha tables.
The Great Dane is also a businessman, and he puts most of his effort toward poker-related ventures. His earliest venture was in 2003 as a founding partner of the online poker room Poker Champs, which Betfair eventually purchased. Hansen has also appeared in a series of instructional DVDs, and in 2007, he launched an Internet forum dedicated to poker strategy and general poker discussion. Fans also love him for his blog, the Gus Tracker, and he has gained fame as a commentator for the World Series of Backgammon. More recently, Gus Hansen has made a splash with his involvement with Full Tilt Poker, where he serves as both a spokesperson and house pro.
